Tales from the Fjeld

We were upon the Fjeld,Edward and Iand Anders our guide,in search of reindeer.

We will not askhow long ago it was;because, after all,it was not so very long ago.

How did weget there?

Well,if you must know,we went to the endof the Sogne Fjordin a boat,and then we drove up the valleyin cariolesuntil we were tired;then we started walking,and now,at about three P.M.,we were on the Fjeldheading for the Sœter or Shieling,where we were going to spend the night.

On this first day,we did not expectto find any deer,so we walked steadilyover the stony groundthat slanted across the Fjeld,which showed its long shoulderabove us;meanwhile,the snowy peaksshone in the distance,and the glaciersreached downto meet the Fjeld,for as the Norse proverb says,if the valley won't come to the mountain,the mountain must meet the valley.
